The goddess of the sky, Nut, is represented here with her protective outspread wings. On her head are cows' horns and the sundisk, which are elements that could be worn by various goddesses. The small holes were made for sewing the pieces onto a mummy's wrappings, but such elements could also be incorporated into beaded nets, which were placed on top of a mummy's wrappings.
Formerly Carnarvon Collection (before 1923). Purchased by the Museum from Lady Carnarvon, 1926. Howard Carter recalled the piece as perhaps being from the Lady Meux Collection, and it may well be catalog no.196 on p. 172 of Wallis Budge's Catalogue of the Lady Meux Collection (1896 edition), where it is said to be from Abydos.
