Chocolate pots are distinguished by a small hole in the lid where a stirring rod could be inserted while the cover remained closed, keeping the contents warm. The removable acorn finial, attached by a chain, provides the opening. The Hutchinson arms engraved on the side are probably those of Thomas Hutchinson, a Boston merchant and member of the Massachusetts legislature.
Inscription: engraved on body to left of spout: [arms and crest of Hutchinson]Marking: marked on body to left of handle and cover to left of thumbpiece: EW / fleur de lis (in shaped surround)
Said to have belonged to Thomas Hutchinson (1674/5–1739), Boston, MA; said to have descended in the Hutchinson family; Alphonso T. Clearwater, bequest to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1933.
