Made for the Countess of Shaftesbury (d. 1758) for Saint Giles's Haouse, Dorset, this fire screen has a Rococo frame that is related to designs by Thomas Chippendale (The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754). The panel, based on a cartoon made for the Savonnerie manufactory in Paris, was woven in England, probably by Thomas Whitty at Axminister.
