This bronze is one of three in our collection by the goldsmith-sculptor Antico, so-named because of his adherence to models of classical antiquity. Here, he adapted the torso of an ancient marble for what may have been a lamp made for one of his foremost patrons, the Gonzaga family of Mantua.
Possibly Gonzaga Collections , Mantua ; Antal Marczibanyi , Budapest (?) ; Maurice Kann (until 1910; sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, December 5–8, 1910, no. 346; to Drey); Drey (from 1910) ; Queen Marie of Rumania ; Prince Nicolas of Rumania (until 1964; sale, Galerie Jurg Stuker, Bern, May 21–30, 1964, no. 3389); [ Cyril Humphris , London (1965–before 1982) ]
