The Charleston, a fast-paced American jazz dance, swept through Europe after Josephine Baker introduced it to Parisian audiences in the Revue Nègre in 1925. The surprisingly tilted frame of this photograph suggests that, like the dancer (Xanti Schawinsky) and his accompanist (Clemens Röseler), the photographer too had become infected with the music's swinging rhythms.
Inscription: Stamped in negative (?) on print, recto LL: "FOTO LUX FEININGER"; signed in pencil, verso: "Lux F."; inscribed and signed in ink, verso LC: "Le charleston sur le toit du Bauhaus // (1927) // Lux Feininger"; markings in orange pencil, verso CL; inscribed on round label affixed to print, verso UL: "79";
