Faking It Symposium: Return of the Suppressed

The symposium "Truth, Lies, and Photographs" was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Faking It: Manipulated Photography before Photoshop, on view October 11, 2012, through January 27, 2013. In this talk, A. D. Coleman, an indepent critic, outlines the history of the Pictorialism movement within photography, its decline and dismissal, and its contemporary revival as an art form.

Description

The Charleston, a fast-paced American jazz dance, swept through Europe after Josephine Baker introduced it to Parisian audiences in the Revue Nègre in 1925. The surprisingly tilted frame of this photograph suggests that, like the dancer (Xanti Schawinsky) and his accompanist (Clemens Röseler), the photographer too had become infected with the music's swinging rhythms.
