This bodhisattva, richly bejeweled and crowned, holds a fly whisk in his raised hand, indicating that he was designed as an attendant figure to an image of the Buddha. In his lowered hand he holds the stem of a lotus (the upper flower portion of which has not survived), an iconographic feature that suggests identification as Padmapani Lokeshvara, a form of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion.
