This majestic Buddha is one of the finest products of sixteenth-century Sri Lankan Buddhist art. The figure is seated on a waisted lotus-vine pedestal, deep in meditation, the body displaying numerous auspicious marks (lakshana)—signs of his Buddhahood. Convention dictates that the Buddha has thirty-two mahapurusalakshana and eighty lesser marks, as witnessed by the forehead mark (urna), the flame protuberance (ushnisha), the extended earlobes and locks of hair, and the lotus markings on the hand and feet.
