Seated Buddha, Tang dynasty, ca. 650, originally in the Daifu Temple, Zhengding, Hebei Province, China. Rogers Fund, 1919 (19.186)
|
The imagery of Buddhist sculpture illustrates the goal of this religionthe attainment of a transcendent state of bliss, often known as nirvana. The Buddha's serenity is here reflected in his idealized figure, introspective expression, and meditative posture. The bump on the top of his head and the elongated earlobes symbolize respectively his supernal wisdom and detachment from worldly affairs.
