The Meditation on the Passion, ca. 1510, by Vittore Carpaccio. John Stewart Kennedy Fund, 1911 (11.118)
|
This is a meditative painting on the meaning of Jesus Christ's death. On the right, Job, the Israelite who underwent undeserved suffering, sits on a block inscribed: "I know that my redeemer liveth." Saint Jerome, portrayed as a hermit on the left, interpreted this passage from the Old Testament to refer to the resurrection of Christ. The landscape, arid on the left, lush on the right, suggests sites of meditation on the themes of death and renewal.
