The Lamentation, ca. 1582, by Ludovico Carracci. Purchase, Lila Acheson Wallace and The Annenberg Foundation Gifts; Harris Brisbane Dick, Rogers, and Gwynne Andrews Funds; Pat and John Rosenwald, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Fisch, and Jon and Barbara Landau Gifts; Gift of Mortimer D. Sackler, Theresa Sackler and Family; and Victor Wilbour Memorial, Marquand, The Alfred N. Punnett Endowment, and Charles B. Curtis Funds, 2000 (2000.68)
The picture treats the archetypal Christian subject about death with an immediacy that marks a new chapter in European painting. The figure of Christ is based on a posed model and placed close to the picture plane for the viewer's contemplation. The Virgin Mary is shown as a plain, middle-aged woman so that the viewer can fully identify with her grief.

Location: Gallery 30, European Paintings, second floor
