Saint Thecla Praying for the Plague-Stricken, sketch, 1758–59, by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Rogers Fund, 1937 (37.165.2)
This moving picture is a preliminary sketch for an enormous altarpiece in the town of Este, which was devastated by the plague in 1630. Saint Thecla, a first-century martyr, intercedes for the townspeople and secures divine intervention. The picture expresses hope in the midst of catastrophe.

Location: Gallery 20, European Paintings, second floor
