Plaque from a Cross with Censing Angels, ca. 1180, France (Limoges). The Cloisters Collection, 2001 (2001.634)
The exquisitely enameled angels portrayed on this plaque are hovering in the clouds as mournful, yet faithful, witnesses to the course of earthly events. This plaque was originally placed at the top of a crucifix.
