Raven Rattle, mid-19th century, Haida or Tsimshian Indians, British Columbia, Canada. The Crosby Brown Collection, 1889 (89.4.611)
|
Music has been a universal tool for spiritual and physical healing since ancient times. Among Native American tribes along the Northwest coast of the United States and Canada, colorfully painted raven-shaped rattles such as this one were once used by traditional healers or shamans. Later they became part of the chiefs' regalia and were used during potlatch ceremonies.
