  • Plate, ca. 1784–85
    Chinese for the American market
    Hard paste

    Diam. 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm)
    Rogers Fund, 1917 (17.73)

This plate bears a rather whimsical Angel of Fame displaying the blue and white ribbon and emblem of the Society of the Cincinnati. Its underglaze-blue Fitzhugh border—an elaborate pattern of the late eighteenth century incorporating flowers, pomegranates, often butterflies, and other Chinese motifs—and its overglaze decoration correspond to the large group of porcelains owned by George Washington (1732–1799) and Henry Lee (1756–1818).
