The first Valois king, his wife, and their son are depicted kneeling, as donors of a sculpted altarpiece. According to tradition, this retable comes from the abbey of Jumièges , and may reflect a royal largesse to the Norman abbey after 1332, when Jean de France received the duchy of Normandy. If this were the case, his first wife, Bonne de Luxembourg, would probably have been included in the group. Philippe and Jean's features bear close resemblance to other portraits of them.
