With the financial assistance of notable Philadelphians, architect William Lightfoot Price and his associates founded Rose Valley, a handcraft experiment that began on July 17, 1901. After Rose Valley exhibited at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, they received new commissions and notoriety. Rose Valley furniture recalls the Gothic precedents of British Arts and Crafts. This library table is composed of quartered oak with a dark stain. The hand carving, exaggerated mortise-and-tenon construction, Gothic tracery, and double-dovetail joints are hallmarks of Rose Valley furniture, which is rare as production ceased in 1906.
