Born and raised in rural Westchester, Alice DeLancey married Ralph Izard in New York City in 1767. They lived on his plantation near Charleston, South Carolina, until 1771, when they moved abroad for the duration of the American Revolution. Within a year of settling in London, Mrs. Izard was sitting for Sir Thomas Gainsborough, the most fashionable English painter of the day. Gainsborough painted other residents of Charleston, a city that sent a steady stream of loyalists to England and on the Grand Tour through the continent.
