Most of the models for Degas' horses were Thoroughbreds, raised for the speed and competition of racing. Degas' aim was to capture their spirited movements with ever-increasing accuracy. This bronze also records the damage to the right front leg of the original sculpture, damage that exposed the wire armature used to support the fragile wax medium.
