Horse with Head Lowered, cast in 1920 from a wax sculpture modeled probably ca. 1883–90
Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917)
Bronze, number 22/A; 7 1/8 x 10 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. (17.8 x 27.3 x 8.3 cm)
H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929 (29.100.430)

Most of the models for Degas' horses were Thoroughbreds, raised for the speed and competition of racing. Degas' aim was to capture their spirited movements with ever-increasing accuracy. This bronze also records the damage to the right front leg of the original sculpture, damage that exposed the wire armature used to support the fragile wax medium.
