Manwaring's little book of furniture designs, so modest in comparison to Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, had quite a following among the cabinetmakers of Boston. The pierced and carved back design of the chair illustrated in plate 9 was a particular favorite there.
