    The inscription on this painting is not completely legible. It has been read as "A Monsieur Cuvillier," the son-in-law of the painter François Boucher, and, more generally, as "to my cavalier." In any case, it is the young woman who is dispatching the letter. The painting probably dates from the 1770s.
