These panels illustrate the belief that the pope is the representative of Christ on earth. Under separate architectural baldachins, the apostle Peter, wearing the papal tiara, kneels before Christ, who, in a literal representation of a Gospel text (Matthew 16:18), is the key to the Kingdom of Heaven.
