In 1874, Thomas Kensett presented the museum with thirty-eight paintings found in the studio of his brother, John Frederick Kensett, after the artist's death. Since Kensett executed most of them just prior to his death in the summer of 1872, the paintings are known collectively as "The Last Summer's Work." The paintings were exhibited at the National Academy of Design in the spring of 1873 during the large auction sale of Kensett's work. Eaton's Neck, Long Island is characteristic of the almost abstract simplicity and quietism of most of Kensett's late coastal paintings.
