This picture, like the Museum's winter view of the Tuileries Gardens (66.36 and 1979.414), belongs to the first series of works that Pissarro painted in 1898–99 from his apartment in the rue de Rivoli in Paris. The paintings were well received, and the following year he rented the same apartment and executed a second group of fourteen canvases.
