Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes (b. 1778), daughter of Boston's Spanish consul John Stoughton, married Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot (07.75) at sixteen. This portrait, painted about the time of her 1794 marriage as a companion to her husband's, depicts her in a richly ornamented costume typical of Hispanic noble dress of the day. The Stoughton family coat of arms, on the left, and that of the Jaudenes family, on the right, were added later by another artist.
