Originally this ivory formed the central part of a large and ornate cross worn as a pendant. (The arms of the cross are now missing.) The front, carved in high relief, shows Christ in Majesty, his right hand blessing, his left hand on a book. The reverse presents the Lamb of God surrounded by two of what once were four evangelists' symbols. The pairing of Christ in Majesty with the Lamb of God reflects contemporary interest in Apocalyptic imagery. In its account of the last days, the Book of Revelation discusses and links both images.
