A Dance in the Country, ca. 1755
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian, Venetian, 1727–1804)
Oil on canvas; 29 3/4 x 47 1/4 in. (75.6 x 120 cm)
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, 1980 (1980.67)

Although Giandomenico Tiepolo assisted his father in numerous decorative enterprises, his own talent lay in the depiction of contemporary life. This picture—one of Giandomenico's most evocative and appealing works—dates about 1755. It shows an actress dancing with a young man wearing the traditional costume of the commedia dell'arte character Mezzetino.
