The Bay of Naples with Vesuvius in the Background, 1843
Christen Købke (Danish, 1810–1848)
Pen and black ink over pencil; Sheet: 10 13/16 x 15 9/16 in. (27.5 x 39.5 cm)
Purchase, Guy Wildenstein Gift, 2003 (2003.179)

Købke is regarded as the most important painter of Denmark's golden age, although his career was cut short by his early death at the age of thirty-eight. His most ambitious compositions were inspired by the German artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) and thus include grandly Romantic land- and seascapes. The Museum's drawing is closely related to a painting (Toledo Museum of Art) that Købke completed after a two-year sojourn in Italy.
