The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquires hundreds of works of art every year through gifts and purchases. These acquisitions enhance the Museum's collection in countless ways, filling gaps that are inevitable even within a collection as comprehensive as the Metropolitan's. (For highlights, read the Director's Note from Recent Acquisitions: A Selection: 1999–2000, a special issue of The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin.) Thanks to a resourceful curatorial staff—and, of course, to the Museum's exceedingly generous donors—it is possible to encounter new works of the highest quality every time one visits the Metropolitan.
