Please note that the Hart Room will be temporarily closed to the public through Fall 2008.
This room, which contains a rare surviving example of seventeenth-century American interior woodwork, is from the home of Thomas Hart in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Ipswich, one of the first towns in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was founded in 1633. The house was built sometime between 1639, when Hart is first listed as a landowner in Ipswich, and 1674, the year of his death. The room is typical of those found in homes built by New England settlers during the 1600s and is the earliest example of an interior in the American Wing.
