Met Blogs

«Digital Underground, dedicated to the ongoing activities of the Digital Media Department, is the newest addition to the Museum's growing list of blogs.»

Although it had been in the works for a while, the Museum's blog program officially launched on December 18, 2007, with blog.mode, an online "catalogue" of sorts that accompanied the Costume Institute exhibition of the same name (on view December 18, 2007–April 13, 2008). It was quickly followed by The Medieval Garden Enclosed, the very popular blog dedicated to the gardens of The Cloisters, authored by Managing Horticulturist Deirdre Larkin.

The banner image for Digital Underground features a detail from Motion and Rest #2 by the American artist Jim Campbell, which we selected both because of its use of digital technology (in this case, LEDs) and its reference to iconic imagery from the past, the stop-motion photographs of Edweard Muybridge from the 1880s. The fact that works by both of these artists can be found within the Collections section of this site reveals not only the breadth of the Met's encyclopedic holdings, but also the wonderful contribution that digital media has made to the Museum's mission "to collect, preserve, study, exhibit, and stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art that collectively represent the broadest spectrum of human achievement."

The Department of Digital Media includes more than sixty team members (not actually underground; in most cases merely behind the scenes). We look forward to posting about our activities, answering questions, and hearing your thoughts!
