Bay and Harbor of New York from Bedlow's Island

1864 or 1866
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This painting is modeled on an engraving by James Smillie after a work by John Gadsby Chapman. Chapman's sketch and Smillie's print were exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1836. The print was later reproduced in the New-York Mirror for its issue dated April 15, 1837. The view is taken from Bedlow's (now Liberty) Island, shown in the left foreground. At the extreme left in the background is Paulus Hook. In the distance on the right is seen Castle William on Governor's Island, and in the center is Manhattan Island with Castle Garden on the waterfront and the steeple of Trinity Church dominating the skyline.
