Best known as a painter, Davies collected antiquities and African wood carvings that inspired his own work in sculpture. "Nude" reveals Davies's interest in the art of classical Greece. The frontal composition, with the contour of the head and arms cut away from a supporting pillar, resembles the Praxitelean "stephanusam", a woman holding a garland.
