Johnson painted this group portrait for William Tilden Blodgett, a wealthy New York manufacturer and avid art collector, who is shown with his family in the parlor of their house at 27 West Twenty-fifth Street. The room, with its richly contrasting wood paneling, is a superb example of the Renaissance Revival style, and relates closely to the Museum’s parlor from Meriden, Connecticut (1870), adjoining this gallery.
