This cast and gilt bronze thermometer, with red polychrome rubbed into its recesses, would have been at home on a desk in a library. Each item in the "Bookmark" desk set was designed around the colophon of a notable printer in history. Tiffany used this subject in the wall and mantel decoration for the New York City library of his friend Robert W. de Forest and introduced it as an ornamental motif in the decorations his firm supplied for the Chicago Public Library in 1897.
