Of the surviving Tiffany drawings of individual components for church furnishings, this example is among the most highly finished. The pulpit was to be fabricated in brilliant white and contrasting green-figured marble, framed by mosaic detailing. The draftsman simulated the texture of highly polished marble by applying a varnish or glaze over the green areas, giving a sheen to the normally soft matte paper surface.
Inscription: [recto, on center pulpit panel, beginning at lower left and reading clockwise around perimeter]: IN LOVING MEMORY OF • A [?] / CHAPIN / BORN • A • D • MDCCCLXXXII / [bottom of central pulpit panel]: BORN MDCCCXX;
[verso, at lower left and right respectively, stamped in blue ink]: 7924; 7937
