The sculptural mantel, porcelain vase, and fireplace accessories evoke a sense of heritage in this newly constructed space—a common goal for revival-style interiors popular at the turn of the twentieth century. In this large drawing, the iron fireback, which found precedent in European and Colonial homes, would have protected the rear of the fireplace while radiating heat back into the room. The strip of fabric, or lambrequin, hung across the mantel references seventeenth-century Dutch interiors, in which it shielded the mantel from smoke. Despite their practical use, both of these elements could be quite decorative and, like the fireplace itself, served a largely aesthetic purpose during this period.
