Inscription: Inscribed in ink on verso: Ellen McCoy/adopted dauther of Governor Colden/married/Herman Ruggles of/New Milford and/New York/painted by INMAN [this last word in graphite, different handwriting] (There is no apparent removal of another name under the inscription "INMAN", apparently the author of the ink inscription did not fill in an artist's name.
Ellen Vanderpoel McCoy (b. 1792; later Mrs. Herman Ruggles), the sitter; to her daughter Ellen Rosalie Ruggles (d. 1901); to her cousin Emily Vanderpoel; descended in the family to the present owner (consigned to Landry Auctioneers and Appraisers, Essex, Mass., March 2003)
