Formerly an important decorator at Royal Worcester, Callowhill most likely painted this ornate plate, which is signed and inscribed with a Brooklyn address, shortly after his arrival in the United States.
Marking: On reverse: painted with gilt three-point crown; painted in red: Jas. C. Callowhill / 144 Java St./ Brooklyn E.D. Later paper label (handwritten in ink on applied paper label affixed with tape): " 1 ROYAL WORCESTER PLATE / BY CALLOWAY. ONLY 2 MADE / AFTER HE LEFT WORCESTER / FOR AMERICA"
