To compete with Boston imports, chair makers in Philadelphia introduced a local interpretation of the fashionable Queen Anne style, wherein virtually all the structural members were gracefully curved. This armchair is an elegant example, made inviting by its “balloon” seat and splayed arms with crisply scrolled armrests.
