This portrait of the writer-philosopher Montesquieu is a reduction of a full-size marble executed as one of a series of statues of the Great Men of France commissioned on behalf of Louis XVI from Clodion, Houdon, Pajou, and other sculptors. Beginning in 1782 the series was produced at Sèvres from the artists' terracotta models.
