Inscription: An inscription in pencil on the back of the box reads: Myra Bates-Wilcutt/ About the year/ 1817
The piece was made in about 1817 by Myra Bates (1798-1885) of Cohasset, MA. She married Joseph Wilcutt in 1835; together they had one living child, Myra Josephine, but she predeceased her mother. It is not known whether the piece continued to be passed down in the family. Its history is unknown until it was purchased in October 2005 by Amy Finkel of M. Finkel & Daughter (the seller) from another dealer at the Deerfield, MA Antiques show.
