This bust is linked to a group of portraits attributed to Pilon or his workshop and variously said to depict Charles IX or his brother Henri III.
possibly Connétable Anne de Montmorency ; possibly Duc de Montmorency Laval ; Montmorency-Laval family (listed in Altman’s collection as coming from the château of Magnac-Laval, which became a property of Pierre de Montmorency-Laval in 1681. The author is vague: “it may be considered” to have belonged originally to the Montmorency family; “it has been insinuated that it was a royal present to Anne de Montmorency.” The handbook of the Benjamin Altman Collection states that it “remained from the time of its execution until recently in the ancestral château of the Duc de Montmorency Laval.”); Benjamin Altman (until 1913; bequeathed to MMA)
