Of Chinese inspiration, both in its form and blue-and-white color scheme, the jar is painted in a manner that combines Renaissance grotesque elements based on etchings by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau (ca. 1510/20–1585/6) with the contemporary designs by Jean Berain (1637–1711).
