Inscribed on the front of the tankard: Johann Grave* Elisabeth Berens 1707 and Wenn Lieb und Fried sich Küssen, wird unglück weichen müssen (When Love and Peace kiss, misfortune must give way). Johann Grave was a customs official in Riga.
Inscription: Inscribed on front: Johann Grave * Elisabeth Berens 1707; on cover: Wenn Lieb und Fried sich Küssen, wird unglück weichen müssen (trans.: When Love and Peace Kiss, unhappiness must flee away).

Marking: Stamped on left side of handle near lip: Crossed keys within a shield (city mark of Riga in use in the eighteenth century); stamped on right side of handle near lip: Roman capitals I G E within a shaped reserve (cameo), (maker's mark of Johann Georg Eben).
