Between 1760 and 1763, the talented porcelain painter Dodin worked in a distinct Chinese manner as seen on this vase. Chinoiserie engravings by French artists inspired some of these genre scenes, but a Chinese woodcut may have been the source for the charming composition on the front. The exotic decoration is continued on the back with a medallion depicting a bouquet of Oriental flowers such as peonies and chrysanthemums with remarkable angular stems. The marbleizing of the rose ground (rose marbré) was achieved by covering it with a blue enamel coating, which after it had dried, was then partially removed creating a the desired effect. Then the purplish enamel was applied, followed by the gilded highlights.
