In 1877, while still a stockbroker, Paul Gauguin and his family moved to an apartment in a house in Paris owned by Paul Bouillot, a skilled marble cutter, or praticien. Under Bouillot's guidance, Gauguin modeled a portrait of his wife, Mette. Although there is some disagreement as to whether the marble version of Mette's portrait was executed by Bouillot or Gauguin, there is no doubt that this portrait of Gauguin's son was cut by Gauguin's own hand.
