Label inside cover: "SOUP TUREEN given to LORD & LADY / WOLSELEY by Colonel & Mrs Kirkwood / in Dublin, 1895 / This dish forms a portion of a / dinner set made by the Handels / Company in China as a present to / Frederick the Great soon after his / accession to the throne in 1740. / The greater part of the set is in the end room of the Hohenzollern / Museum at Berlin, but the vegetable / dishes of which this is one, are difficient. [sic] / The ship with this china was / wrecked on the Coast of East Fries- / land, and was lost with the greater / part of the cargo. Only a few / things were recovered. These became / the property of the owner of the / Coast, which did not then belong to / Prussia. East Friesland was subse- / quently inherited by Frederick II / (the Great) on the death of the last / Duke of Ost-Frise which took place / on 25/5/1744. The Insignia, Collar / and Order, & Banners on the dish & / stand are those of the Black Eagle / with Frederick's monogram. / The arms probably include among / them those of: --Kingdom of Prussia, / Duchy of Pomerania, March of Branden- / burg, Duchy of Crossen, Duchy of / Magdeburg, Principality of Minden, Duchy / of Cleves, Duchy of Gelders, City of / Berlin and other Lordships. / H.K. / Mountjoy / Sept. 1895."
