Small tea services, often intended for two, were manufactured in large quantities at Sèvres. This service (64.101.361a, b–.368) is distinguished by the complex pattern that surrounds the oval reserves painted with birds. The minutely detailed scales suggest peacock feathers, and the labor involved in painting them would have made this service unusually expensive. Sèvres made a variety of shapes for each of the types of tea wares that it produced. Each model was assigned a name; that given to the tray was also used to designate the service itself.
