Bequest of R. Thornton Wilson, in memory of his wife, Florence Ellsworth Wilson, 1977
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 533
The complex decorative schemes on this box, including four hands of playing cards on the lid, a game of chess in progress on the underside, and three enigmatic inscriptions, suggest that it was commissioned as an intimate gift and expresses a coded message that cannot be easily deciphered today.

Inscribed in black enamel, in back on cover: Napolitaine en amour
Inscribed in black enamel, on underside: Le Roÿ Sans Vinqueur [sic]
